Masho Gebremikael May 2023

When Masho Gebremikael moved to Maine from Ethiopia 10 years ago, he admits middle school was “a bit challenging,” not only because of the language gap but because he was naturally shy. But in his junior year of high school a guidance counselor encouraged him to get more integrated into school life by joining a club, and he found cross-country running. “I started loving it. I also ran in college at USM, and after an introduction class to athletic training, I thought that would be a great major.” Four years later, with a major in athletic training, he’s ready to take it to the next level: “I am trying to go for a master’s in kinesiology, I want to work at a higher level of athletic training.” He’s currently considering online courses at two West coast schools, and, after that, “I’d love to work in Maine at some college; Maine would be a great place to work.” He also encourages the next generation to stay and take advantage of the quality schools here, and help the state grow, both in terms of academic excellence and diversity. “I’ve seen a lot of diversity coming through and a lot of acceptance from the Maine residents. Yeah, I definitely love Maine. I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.”
